Andrea Hutson died of eclampsia on September 4, 2003, after collapsing at her home while getting ready to see her obstetrician. Hutson was 34 years old, had been married for three years and was expecting her first child. Her husband immediately called paramedics, who rushed her to an area hospital, but efforts to save her and her baby failed.
Andrea Hutson was well known in her area for her work with Spanish-speaking street gangs. Her fluency in Spanish enabled her to organize regular meetings, which brought gang members together to talk out their problems. She wrote grants, raised funds, organized youth soccer leagues, and directed community programs.
