Angela Carder suffered from cancer as a child. After treatment, her cancer went into remission for many years. She married and became pregnant. During her pregnancy, her cancer returned. She was diagnosed as terminally ill by the time she was five to six months into her pregnancy. Despite the expressed wishes of Carder, her husband and family members, and her own physician, the federal government took an interest in preserving the life of her child and backed a court-ordered cesarean. Both Carder and her baby died shortly after the surgery.
Angela Carder died on June 1, 1987, at the age of 27, in Washington, DC.
